community engagement

Since its founding, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. has recognized the advantages of working in our communities and forming partnerships with other organizations.  Our very first partnership was with the men of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.

Delta Theta Sigma Chapter

Cincinnati, Ohio

Chartered in 1962, Delta Theta Sigma Chapter, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., in the Cincinnati Metropolitan area, is the 4th oldest Sigma alumni chapter in the State of Ohio.  Beta Zeta Zeta Chapter has shared numerous joint social, community and civic activities with the brothers of Delta Theta Sigma since its

chartering.

Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.

Founded at Howard University in Washington, D.C. on January 9, 1914, by three African American male students, the Fraternity exemplified the ideals of brotherhood, scholarship, and service.

In the spring of 1919, a Sigma member, Charles Robert Samuel Taylor shared with Arizona Cleaver his idea for a sister organization to the fraternity. Cleaver then presented this idea to fourteen other Howard University women who were interested in forming a sorority.   With the help of Charles Taylor and Sigma Founder A. Langston Taylor, work began to establish a new sorority.

On January 16, 1920, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. was founded and chose the name Zeta Phi Beta. The similar names of both organizations are intentional as the ladies adopted the Greek letters ‘Phi’ and ‘Beta’ to “seal and signify the relationship between the two organizations.”

Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. are unique fraternal organizations because of their constitutional bond.  To date, the two are the only true sister and brother fraternal groups of the Divine 9.  The Zetas both enjoy and foster a mutually supportive relationship as “sisters” to Sigmas.

The Zeta-Sigma Legacy Club

The Sorority’s 2022-2023 International Board of Directors approved a Zeta-Sigma Legacy Club to be inaugurated at the 2024 international conference for married couples who are members of both organizations.
